Mondo on reprinting the 1986 movie poster

We talked to the team behind the sold-out screen-print about colour separations, Unicron, and why the film still hits.

When Mondo announced a limited screen-print tribute to The Transformers: The Movie, it sold through in minutes. We spoke with the team about why a 1986 animated film still commands that kind of demand.

The conversation kept circling back to tone. The movie was darker than anything the franchise had attempted, with real loss and a rock soundtrack that treated its young audience as capable of handling both. The poster had to carry that weight, which meant leaning into Unicron as a looming, planet-sized threat rather than a simple villain.

The technical side was its own challenge, balancing the colour separations to keep the fire and the cosmic scale readable at print size. The result captures what the faithful have always known: the 1986 film is not nostalgia, it is just good.
