Soundwave superior: how a cassette deck became the coolest Decepticon
He barely changed his tone of voice and he never betrayed his leader. That is precisely why he won the fandom.
In a faction defined by treachery, Soundwave stood out by being the one Decepticon who never stabbed Megatron in the back. Loyalty, in a sea of Starscreams, turned out to be the rarest and most magnetic trait of all.
The design helped: a microcassette recorder that opened to deploy a menagerie of minions, paired with that unforgettable vocoded monotone. Soundwave was a gadget and a character at once, and the chest-deck gimmick made him endlessly expandable on toy shelves.
Forty years on he remains a top-tier fan favourite across every continuity, and the Masterpiece and Legacy figures that recreate the cassette gimmick are perennial sellers. Superior, indeed.
