threezero has added Hot Rod and a Fallen Coronation Starscream to its MDLX 1986 Movie Edition line. Both have product pages on threezero’s own store, read this morning, neither is orderable yet, and the copy on them has started doing a job the first three pages never attempted.
Take the initial wave first, because the contrast is the story. threezero’s copy on the Optimus Prime, Megatron and Bumblebee pages calls them “the initial wave”, says each ships with “an exclusive bio card illustrated by series artist Nobuyoshi Habara”, and then spends its one distinguishing sentence on what has been repainted since the last time threezero made that figure. Bumblebee’s rear tyres “have been repainted in an all-yellow finish to match with the character details in the film”. Megatron “removes the swirl pattern on the chest, and the deception symbol has also been repainted in an animated purple finish”. Optimus “includes an updated head with new sculpt, and the backpack has also been repainted in a red finish”. Every one of those sentences is about what threezero changed on a figure it had already tooled. Selling a repaint of a good mould on the repainting is honest enough!
The new pair is written differently. threezero’s line on Hot Rod is that the colours capture “his fiery Autobot warrior form before evolving into Rodimus Prime”. Its line on Starscream is that the greyish white captures “his form prior to being turned to ash by Galvatron’s particle cannon”. Those are not paint notes. They are timestamps, and both of them point forward at something the figure does not depict.
Hot Rod, at seven inches and forty-six points
threezero gives the Hot Rod as approximately 7 inches, or 18cm, with approximately 46 points of articulation, on the die-cast zinc alloy and engineering-grade plastic frame its page describes. We spent thirty days with an MDLX Optimus Prime in April, on the same line. The deco it describes is an orange body, magenta at the shoulders and waist, a yellow flame across the chest and the rear wing. He carries a laser blaster and a blaster rifle, and the two combine into what threezero calls a photon eliminator rifle. The features list says eight sets of interchangeable hands [1].
Fallen Coronation Starscream, at seven point eight
threezero gives the Starscream as approximately 7.8 inches, or 20cm, with approximately 50 points of articulation, which makes it the tallest and the most articulated of the five [2].
Starscream is the more interesting of the two, because both kinds of writing sit in one paragraph on his page. threezero compares it directly to a figure it has already sold: against “the released MDLX Coronation Starscream”, it says, the regal elements are retained and reimagined, and it names the crown, the fabric cape and the shoulder armour as detachable. A note on what has been repainted is the initial wave’s move. Then the same paragraph tells you the greyish white is Starscream “prior to being turned to ash”, which is not a note on paint at all. One sentence sells a variant; the next sells a scene.
The rest of the loadout is two interchangeable faceplates, a wing backpack, two laser cannons, two short melee blades and a Megatron Alt-mode Blaster, all detachable, and a features list that says five pairs of interchangeable hands [1].
Neither has a price on it yet
Each of the three initial-wave pages carries a line reading “Pre-order Price” followed by a figure: 99.90 USD for Optimus Prime, 99.90 for Megatron, 69.90 for Bumblebee, all three with an estimated shipment of 4th Quarter 2026. The Hot Rod and Starscream pages carry no such line. Both are filed in threezero’s Pre-Order category, both show 0.00 in the price field, and on both the button reads Coming Soon rather than Add to cart. Both also carry the store’s standard note that the item is in development and the final product may vary from the promotional images.
What you can buy today
All three of the initial wave are live pre-orders at BigBadToyStore, read this morning, all showing ADD TO CART and all estimated to arrive January 2027. Optimus Prime and Megatron are $102.99 each; Bumblebee is $71.99. Optimus and Megatron each require a $10.30 non-refundable down payment at checkout, and Bumblebee requires no deposit at all. All three quote a tariff surcharge inside the listed price, all three offer a Mint Pro packaging tier three dollars above the base, and the CAS graded and cased tier runs $177.99 on Optimus and Megatron and $141.99 on Bumblebee.
Two things are worth noticing before you click, and both of them are gaps between the maker and the shop. BigBadToyStore’s prices sit above threezero’s own pre-order prices by $3.09 on the two big figures and $2.09 on Bumblebee, and the two stores do not agree on when the things arrive: threezero says 4th Quarter 2026 and BigBadToyStore says January 2027 [2].
Entertainment Earth’s keyword search for MDLX returned no matches at all when we ran it this morning, and a BigBadToyStore search for the 1986 Movie Edition returns those same three figures and nothing else. So if you want an MDLX movie figure on a shelf this winter, Optimus, Megatron and Bumblebee are the three on offer.
So the line is five figures deep and its copy has quietly changed register. It opened by telling you what had been repainted since last time, and the newest page on it does that in one sentence and then, in the next, tells you which minute of the film you are buying. threezero is still selling repaints, but it has worked out that the scene sells better than the swirl. Handy timing, in a year when fans have been queueing for the film itself.
[1] The parts layouts on both pages do not obviously match those hand counts. threezero’s Hot Rod card lays out ten hands, six on the upper row and four on the lower, and one of the ten is rendered in blue while every other hand on that card matches the grey of the hands on the posed figure above it. threezero never says what a set contains, so ten hands and eight sets cannot be read against each other. Starscream’s card is the sharper case, because a pair is not ambiguous: eight hands laid out against a features list that says five pairs. Both counts are ours, taken off those two layout images at full size, on figures threezero says are still in development. The same Hot Rod card spells the licence “TTRANSFORMERS” on its title plate, with a doubled T, legible at full resolution. threezero’s Megatron page has a slip of its own, quoted above as written: “the deception symbol has also been repainted”.
[2] The five, as threezero gives them: Bumblebee 5 inches and 36 points, Megatron 7 inches and 45, Hot Rod 7 inches and 46, Optimus Prime 7 inches and 48, Starscream 7.8 inches and 50. threezero’s own centimetre conversions wander a little, and Optimus at “approximately 7” (17.8cm)” against Megatron at “approximately 7” (18 cm)” is the same number of inches done two ways on two pages of the same wave.
