A licensed game usually gets one of two endings. The common one is slow, a tie-in sliding down the charts until it settles at six dollars and stays there. Transformers: EarthSpark - Expedition got the second kind, where the game stops being for sale and nobody who made it says a word about it.

Steam is the only storefront that says so in writing. Where the buy button used to be there is now a grey notice, and it reads “TRANSFORMERS: EARTHSPARK - Expedition is no longer available on the Steam store.” Valve’s own product API still answers with the title, the 13 October 2023 release date, Tessera Studios as developer and Outright Games and Phoenixx as publishers. Then it returns an empty space where the price and the purchasable packages belong [1].

The other three are quieter about it, and quieter is worse, because a page with no notice on it looks like a page that still works. Sony’s PlayStation Store serves the product entry intact, release date and Mandroid blurb and all; what it does not carry, anywhere on the page, is a price or an add-to-cart control of any kind. The Xbox listing loads as well, and the only prices anywhere on it belong to the other games Microsoft recommends underneath. Nintendo has gone furthest of the four. The eShop link that used to open the title now drops a visitor on the store’s front page, and a search of Nintendo’s own catalogue for “earthspark” comes back empty.

So the game is not broken, withdrawn or recalled. It cannot be bought new from any of the four, and what is left is what has already been sold.

The likely reason is that a licence ran out. Expedition exists because Outright Games held a Hasbro licence, and a licence is a term rather than a transfer. When the term runs out the publisher loses the right to go on selling what it made, whatever is still sitting on the servers. Outright has form here, and CBR noted on Thursday that this is the latest of several Outright titles to vanish from storefronts with nothing announced [2]. But neither Outright nor Tessera has said anything at all, so every explanation now in circulation is a guess, this one included.

We have been here before, and recently. Transformers: Tactical Arena shut down in July and took its servers with it, which at least came with a dated announcement and an end screen. Expedition got neither! It is a single-player game on a disc and a cartridge, so nothing about it needed switching off; somebody stopped renewing something, and the four listings came down separately, each storefront handling it its own way.

What is left is the plastic. The figures the game was built around are still on the pegs, and our EarthSpark toy line carries the current ones, Prowl and the New Legends wave included. The only copies of the game now are the ones already pressed. A Switch cartridge was in stock on Amazon this morning, with the listing down to its last copy [3].

Nobody should wait for a relisting. A lapsed licence does not un-lapse, and the quiet way this one went suggests there was never going to be an announcement telling us when it did.
