The Transformers (UK)
Simon Furman’s weekly UK strips grew into their own epic: Death’s Head, the Wreckers, Time Wars. Faster, weirder, beloved.
The run
What it is
The Transformers was Marvel UK's licensed British Transformers title, launched with a cover date of 20 September to 3 October 1984 at 25p, edited by Sheila Cranna, with a Jerry Paris cover and a free sheet of action transfers. It began as a fortnightly and switched to weekly, full colour publication with issue #27 (14 September 1985, price up to 30p), by which point Ian Rimmer had taken the editor's chair. It ran for 332 issues, ending with #332 on 18 January 1992, plus annuals, Collected Comics specials and Winter and Summer Specials. Alongside the main strip it carried Marvel back-ups (Machine Man, Iron Man, Planet Terry, Robotix), Lew Stringer's humour strips Robo-Capers and later Combat Colin, fact files, and a letters page famously fronted in character by Grimlock as Grimgrams. Action Force and Visionaries were both merged into the title during its run.,Because the UK book came out far more often than the American monthly, it could not survive on reprints alone. Marvel UK's solution was twofold. First, it re-cut each US issue into two shorter British instalments, so US #1 became UK #1 and #2, US #2 became UK #3 and #4, and so on. Second, whenever the reprint supply ran dry it commissioned brand new British stories set in the same continuity. The first of these was Steve Parkhouse's Man of Iron in #9 to #12, and from #13 the gap-filling material became a permanent feature of the book rather than an emergency measure. Over eight years the UK strip produced hundreds of pages of original material, its own characters (Death's Head, Impactor and the Wreckers, Straxus), its own future timeline, and crossovers with Action Force and Doctor Who Magazine.,The UK comic is loved because the home-grown material was, story for story, more ambitious and darker than the licensed toy tie-in it was supposed to be. It treated the war as a war, killed characters, gave minor Autobots real interior lives, and built a tightly plotted continuity that stitched the American issues into a single ongoing saga instead of dropping them in at random, which is what Marvel UK's other reprint titles tended to do. Simon Furman is the reason. He debuted as a writer on The Enemy Within in #13 (9 March 1985), became the dominant voice on the title and eventually its editor, and wrote the epics that define it: Target: 2006, Wanted: Galvatron Dead or Alive, Legacy of Unicron, Space Pirates, Time Wars, Aspects of Evil. On the strength of that work Marvel US handed him the American book from issue #56, and he later wrote for IDW and for Beast Wars, making him the single most prolific Transformers writer in any medium.

Who made it
Creators
| Simon Furman | Debuted with The Enemy Within (#13 to #17) and went on to write the great majority of the UK-original material, including Target: 2006, Dinobot Hunt, Wanted: Galvatron Dead or Alive, Legacy of Unicron, Space Pirates, Time Wars, Aspects of Evil and Matrix Quest for the US book. Co-created Death's Head and the Wreckers. Took over the American monthly from issue #56. |
| Geoff Senior | One of the title's signature artists. Drew Death's Head's first appearance in #113 and co-created the character's look, which was distinctive enough that Furman rewrote the dialogue to fit it. Also drew large stretches of Target: 2006 and Time Wars-era material. |
| Jeff Anderson | Principal artist on Target: 2006 and a mainstay across the UK-original run, including Enemy Action and Aspects of Evil. |
| Steve Parkhouse | Wrote Man of Iron (#9 to #12), the very first UK-original Transformers story and the only UK story ever reprinted in the American comic. |
| John Ridgway | Drew the opening chapters of Man of Iron and the first part of The Enemy Within, setting an unusually moody, painterly tone for a toy tie-in. |
| Mike Collins | Completed Man of Iron and drew most of The Enemy Within and parts of Raiders of the Last Ark. |
| Will Simpson | Drew UK-original material through the mid run including parts of Dinobot Hunt and Target: 2006. |
| Barry Kitson | Drew parts of Dinobot Hunt and other 1985 to 1986 UK-original strips. |
| Bryan Hitch | Broke into comics at eighteen on Marvel UK. Drew the one-page Death's Head strip commissioned to secure Marvel's ownership of the character, and pencilled the climax of Legacy of Unicron in #151 before moving on to the Death's Head solo book. |
| Andrew Wildman | Defined the look of the later UK run, notably Time Wars (#199 to #205) and Aspects of Evil, and later drew the American title and IDW's Regeneration One. |
| Lee Sullivan | Drew UK-original stories from the late 1980s including material in the City of Fear and Aspects of Evil periods. |
| Dan Reed | Artist on Space Pirates and other late-1980s UK-original strips. |
| Ian Rimmer | Took over as editor around issue #21 and oversaw the move to weekly, full colour publication from #27. Also wrote UK-original material. |
| Sheila Cranna | Launched the title in 1984 and edited its fortnightly, part-magazine early phase before moving on. |
| Richard Starkings | Lettered the early UK-original stories and later contributed script work to the title. |
| Dan Abnett | Contributed UK-original stories in the later run, including material intended for the unpublished Classics UK volume 6 period. |
| Lew Stringer | Created Robo-Capers, the comic's long-running gag strip, and later Combat Colin, which arrived when Action Force merged into the title. |
| Alan Davis | Painted the wraparound cover for the centenary issue #100, one of the most recognisable images from the run. |
| Jerry Paris | Provided the cover for issue #1 and other early covers. |
| Stephen Baskerville | Inked Andrew Wildman on Time Wars and much of the later run, a partnership that continued into the American book and IDW's Regeneration One. |
| James Hill | Credited on UK-original stories and annual material collected in IDW's Transformers Classics UK volumes 1 to 3. |
| Jamie Delano | Credited on UK-original material collected in Transformers Classics UK volume 2. |
Continuity
UK versus US
The two runs share one continuity, but the UK book is the larger container. Every American issue eventually appeared in Britain, cut in half and serialized weekly, and Marvel UK slotted its own stories into the gaps between them so that the British material sits inside American continuity rather than beside it. Furman took particular care over this from his very first story: The Enemy Within was written to hand the characters back to the US book in the state it had left them, and later UK arcs are routinely built in the narrative space between two American issues. The result is that a British reader following the comic weekly experienced a single unbroken saga in which the US and UK strands feed each other, whereas an American reader saw only about a third of the story. Traffic went almost entirely one way. Man of Iron is the sole UK story ever reprinted in the American title, appearing as US #33 and #34 in 1987, roughly two and a half years after its British publication.,The UK book also ran considerably ahead of the US book in fictional time, because Target: 2006 imported the 1986 movie cast, Galvatron, Ultra Magnus, Rodimus Prime, Cyclonus and Scourge, into the comic well before the American title got there, and gave them a future timeline of their own. That created a body of ideas that existed only in Britain: the Wreckers and Impactor, Straxus, Death's Head, the 2006 and 2009 future eras, the Quintesson plot of Space Pirates, and the version of Unicron established in Legacy of Unicron. Some of it later leaked into the wider franchise when Marvel US handed Furman the American book from issue #56 and again through IDW. The relationship ended asymmetrically: the American series ran to #80 and the British series to #332, with the last British year given over almost entirely to reprints of US #68 to #80 alongside repeats of earlier UK epics, and the planned monthly relaunch of new British stories announced in #330 was cancelled before #333 appeared.

Handle with care
Contested
Comics data is unusually messy: reprint credits, renumbering and first-appearance claims all contradict across sources. What we could not settle is recorded rather than smoothed over.

- Issue 1's on-sale date. The cover date is 20 September to 3 October 1984, but at least one fan history gives an on-sale date of 9 September 1984. Cover date and on-sale date are routinely different for British weeklies, so treat 20 September 1984 as the cover date and the on-sale date as unresolved.
- End date of the run. English Wikipedia's article on the Marvel Transformers comic says the UK title ran September 1984 to July 1991. Multiple other sources, including dated listings for the final issue, give #332 as 18 January 1992. The January 1992 date is better supported but the discrepancy is real and should be noted rather than papered over.
- The Death's Head one-page strip, High Noon Tex. It was drawn by Bryan Hitch for Simon Furman specifically to secure Marvel's ownership of the character before he debuted inside the licensed Transformers comic. Sources disagree on when and where it was actually printed: some say it ran simultaneously in several Marvel UK titles in 1987, others place its publication in 1988 and name Transformers UK #167 and Dragon's Claws #3. A contemporary fan history writing about issue #151 (January 1988) states that the one-pager had been drawn about a year earlier but may not yet have been published. What is not in dispute is that Death's Head's first full appearance in a story is Transformers UK #113, confirmed by Marvel Database, Key Collector Comics, CGC-graded sale listings and multiple fan histories.
- The exact issue in which the Wreckers are revealed as a team. One source places it at #82 within Target: 2006, with individual members appearing earlier in the arc. This was not independently confirmed against a second source and should be verified before publication.
- Individual writer and artist credits for several UK-original stories in the #29 to #65 range (Decepticon Dam-Busters, The Wrath of Guardian, The Wrath of Grimlock, Christmas Breaker, Crisis of Command, The Icarus Theory, Robot Buster, Devastation Derby, Second Generation) were not verified story by story. They are commonly attributed to Furman with artists drawn from the Anderson, Kitson, Simpson, Perkins and Senior pool, but do not state a specific credit without checking the issue.
- Seibertron's index labels UK #9 to #12 as Man of Iron parts 1, 1, 2, 2, while contemporary issue-by-issue coverage gives #12 as part 4. The four-issues, four-parts reading is almost certainly correct and Seibertron's labelling is a data error.
- A widely circulated fan checklist states that issue #150 featured the origin of the Transformers. Issue #150 falls inside the Legacy of Unicron arc (#146 to #151), which does deal with Unicron's creation and the Matrix, so the claim may be a loose description rather than a discrete origin story. Not verified.
- The same checklist has overlapping and duplicated issue ranges from roughly #213 onward, because from that point the comic ran a US reprint and a separate UK-original strip in the same issue. Any archive built from it needs to treat those as parallel tracks, not a contradiction.
- Precise cover dates were confirmed for issues 12, 13, 18, 21, 22, 26, 27, 29, 31, 32, 41, 42, 44, 45, 46, 47, 50, 59, 61, 64, 65, 66, 113, 125, 151 and 332. Dates for other individual issues are interpolated from the fortnightly schedule up to #26 and the weekly schedule from #27, and should be checked before being published as fact.
- The exact issue at which the comic reverted to fortnightly publication near the end of its life is not established here; contemporary accounts say only that it went fortnightly again towards the end.
- tfwiki.net, normally the authoritative source for all of this, could not be fetched at all during this research (it returns an empty body). Every figure above therefore comes from Wikipedia, Seibertron's issue index, the downthetubes retrospective by Ian Wheeler, the issue-by-issue Solar Pool fan commentary, Marvel Database and retailer or grading listings. Where those disagree the disagreement is recorded above rather than resolved.
