The Acid Wastes
The Acid Wastes are a blasted, uninhabitable stretch of Cybertron scoured by acid rain and neutronic fallout, the planet's most lethal open terrain.
The record
What it is
The Acid Wastes are what a machine world looks like after a few million years of weapons testing. Descriptions place them across a large southwestern region of Cybertron, contaminated by neutronic fallout, racked by quakes and washed by acid rain that eats through Cybertronian plating. Nothing lives there voluntarily. The wastes function in the fiction as the terrain you send someone across when you want the journey itself to be the threat.
They are also where Cybertron's outcasts end up. Across the G1 continuity family the Acid Wastes are associated with scavengers, exiles and things that were built to survive them, and they border the Sea of Rust, which means the planet's two great hostile regions form a continuous belt of unusable land. That belt is why Cybertron's habitable geography is a scatter of city-states rather than a connected civilisation, and why holding a city means holding everything.
For G1 specifically the Acid Wastes are a comics-era and reference-material location rather than a cartoon one, and the most detailed descriptions of them come from IDW and the War for Cybertron material rather than from 1980s sources. What the cartoon does supply is the visual grammar: the endless grey-blue metal plains, the toxic pools and the corroded ruins that the Autobots pick their way through whenever an episode returns to Cybertron. The wastes are the name later writers gave to the background the cartoon had been painting all along.

Comics versus cartoon
The Acid Wastes are a named region only in the comics and reference material; the cartoon shows equivalent toxic Cybertronian terrain in episodes like The Search for Alpha Trion without ever naming it.

Trivia
- The Acid Wastes and the Rust Sea together account for most of Cybertron's surface area in mapped versions of the planet, which is why the city-states are so isolated.
- The description of neutronic fallout implies Cybertron was fought over with nuclear-analogue weapons long before the Great War.
- Acid rain on a metal planet is a neat inversion of the Earth environmental anxiety the term came from in the 1980s.
- Acid Storm, the green G1 Seeker, takes his name from the same weather phenomenon and was originally an animation colour error promoted to a character.
Handle with care
Contested
Where the sources disagree, or where a name that everyone treats as original G1 actually arrived much later. We record it rather than smoothing it over.
- Most detailed descriptions come from IDW and game continuities rather than from 1980s G1 sources.
- Its stated extent varies considerably between sources.
