The record

What it is

The Manganese Mountains are Cybertron's wilderness. Remote, uninhabited and far from the city-states, they are the sort of terrain a Transformer goes to when the war has become unbearable, which is precisely what Fortress Maximus does. In Marvel's Headmasters storyline, Fortress Maximus and a group of Autobots who have had enough of a conflict that has consumed millions of years hole up in a cave in the range while they plan something unprecedented: leaving.

That cave is where the decision to emigrate to Nebulos is made. The Autobots who follow Maximus are not deserting so much as refusing, and the mountains are the physical expression of that refusal, a place on Cybertron that is not held by anybody because it is worth nothing to either side. From there they launch for Nebulos, and the entire Headmaster and Targetmaster line of the toy range follows from that departure.

The range's name is characteristic of Cybertronian geography's chemistry-set naming convention. Manganese is a hard, brittle metal used to harden steel, and Cybertron's landscape is consistently named after materials rather than people: manganese mountains, a rust sea, acid wastes. It is a small but effective piece of worldbuilding that keeps reminding you the planet is made of the same stuff as its inhabitants. Later fiction places the range near Iacon, which sits awkwardly with the comics' insistence that it is remote.

Continuity

Comics versus cartoon

The Manganese Mountains are Marvel-only. The cartoon's Headmasters originate on Nebulos with no Cybertronian prelude, and Fortress Maximus there is a converted Hive city rather than a Cybertronian refusenik.

Detail

Trivia

  • The Manganese Mountains exist in the fiction almost entirely as a staging area for the exodus to Nebulos.
  • Cybertron's place names follow a materials-science convention: manganese, rust, acid, all naming the landscape after what it is made of.
  • Later fiction relocated the range to the outskirts of Iacon, contradicting the comics' description of it as remote.
  • Fortress Maximus's decision to leave rather than fight is one of the few genuinely pacifist positions any G1 character takes.

Contested

Where the sources disagree, or where a name that everyone treats as original G1 actually arrived much later. We record it rather than smoothing it over.

  • Whether the range is remote wilderness (Marvel) or close to Iacon (later fiction).
  • No G1 source describes what the mountains actually look like.
