Junkion

Junkion, also called Junk or the Planet of Junk, is a world made of rubbish: mountains of discarded machinery, valleys stratified with refuse, and a ring of derelict spacecraft in orbit, many of them fallen planetside. Its inhabitants are built from the same material. The Junkions assemble themselves and each other out of whatever is lying around, which means they can be blown apart and simply put back together, a property that makes them close to unkillable and that the 1986 film uses for both comedy and awe.

Their culture is entirely derived from Earth broadcast television. Wreck-Gar and his people receive signals from across the galaxy and have built their entire language out of advertising slogans, game show patter and film dialogue, which is why every Junkion line is a quotation. It is one of G1's genuinely strange ideas and it works because the film commits to it completely: Wreck-Gar negotiates, threatens and swears allegiance entirely in ad copy.

Junkion enters the story in The Transformers: The Movie when the damaged Autobot shuttle carrying Ultra Magnus, Perceptor, Springer, Arcee and Daniel Witwicky limps there for repairs. The Junkions attack first, then Hot Rod and Kup arrive, and after Hot Rod bonds with them over their broadcasts Wreck-Gar orders his people to rebuild the dismembered Ultra Magnus. Wreck-Gar then joins the assault on Unicron, and the Junkions remain Autobot allies through the third season, notably in Five Faces of Darkness and The Big Broadcast of 2006, where the Quintessons weaponise their television addiction against them.

• Wreck-Gar was voiced by Eric Idle of Monty Python, and his television-quotation speech pattern was written to suit him.
• The Junkions' ability to reassemble themselves from any available parts makes them the only G1 race that is functionally immortal, a point the film underlines by having them blown apart repeatedly.
• Junkion is one of the very few G1 worlds shown to have been settled by Cybertronians during the Golden Age colonisation programme, with the Vanguard-class refugee ships glimpsed in Desertion of the Dinobots, Part 2 as the likely means.
• Later fiction explains the planet's existence as debris pulled together by the buried Requiem Blaster's gravity, an origin invented decades after the film.
