The Hall of Records

The Hall of Records is Cybertron's memory. Housed in Iacon, it is the archive of the planet's history, culture and law, and its keeper is Alpha Trion, the ancient antiquarian who is the closest thing G1 has to a historian. In the wider G1 continuity family it is where Orion Pax worked as a data clerk before Megatron's attack led to his reconstruction as Optimus Prime, which makes it the single most consequential building on the planet: the Autobot leader is, by origin, a librarian.

In G1 cartoon terms the Hall is largely implied rather than shown. The cartoon's version of Optimus Prime's origin, told in War Dawn, makes Orion Pax a dock worker at an energy storage facility rather than an archivist, and Alpha Trion is a machine smith working in secret. The Hall of Records as a named location, and Orion as a clerk within it, is a later formalisation that has since become the dominant version, spread through Exodus, the War for Cybertron games and Transformers: Prime.

What the Hall contributes to G1 geography is the idea that Cybertron's history is a physical, defensible object. Every invasion of Iacon in the third season aims at the archive, because whoever holds the records controls what the Transformers believe about themselves. That is exactly the fight the Quintessons pick in Five Faces of Darkness: they do not need to conquer Cybertron if they can convince it that they created it.

• The cartoon's own origin story, War Dawn, makes Orion Pax a dock worker, not an archivist. The clerk version is a later retcon that has since become standard.
• Alpha Trion is voiced by Paul Eiding and is the cartoon's designated repository of everything the plot needs explained.
• The Hall's importance is thematic: the season three Quintesson arc is entirely a fight over historical record rather than territory.
• Maccadam's Old Oil House, the Autobots' bar, is usually placed near the Hall, and is likewise a non-cartoon addition.
